Returning To The Mountains
Published August 21st, 2006 in Hiking, Hiking Log, NewsThe family and I are planning a trip to the Smokies for Labor Day weekend with some good friends of ours. It looks like I will be hiking LeConte this go round. Although we haven’t finalized any plans, we are looking at ascending up Alum Cave Bluff trail and descending via Rainbow Falls or Trillium Gap.
Hello:
Years ago I headed up to Mt. Leconte and we stopped on the left at a great overlook. My friend called it the “Razorback”. Great spine of a cliff that had a hole in it a few hundered yards down the “spine” Way back in the 80’s it had a canister with a log and we signed it. Do you know where this spot is on the way to Mt. Leconte . I want to find it again.
Regards,
Spencer
That is Litte Duck Hawk Ridge. You can no longer hike on the ridge. The whole in the ridge is called Eye of the Needle. The trail has been closed to protect the hawks. However, the ridge can be viewed from several locations on the Alum Cave Bluff Trail, from Inspiration Point to a little above the Alum Cave Bluff. There are many pictures of this ridge at http://www.mtleconte.com.
